Warning as UK schools hit by ransomware

Please be aware that ransomware hackers are targeting schools in the UK. The scam involves the hacker phoning schools and and pretending to be an official from the DfE who needs to email important documents to the Headteacher. They then send malware to the agreed email address, usually in the form of a disguised Microsoft Word or Excel file. When the file is opened it locks all of the files on the computer and displays a demand for £8,000 to decrypt them. Police have issued a number of warnings around the country advising schools, academies and colleges to remain vigilant. My advice is "If in doubt, check it out" BEFORE OPENING THE FILE!
